Chairman’s thoughts

Cricketforce came and went over a month ago. Some people helped out but many, too many, did nothing at all.  Much as I would like to I won’t name and shame, probably because those individuals have no shame and so it would be pointless.

The result of this is that the patio is not finished. I hesitate to say still not finished, but it is so disappointing. Especially to those who have given up time. In an effort to put this right I told all the players that there would be a working party at the ground on Saturday 10th May at which I hoped we would get most of the rest of the flags down and all of the pickets for the fence painted.

NOBODY turned up. Thanks. I now know where I stand.

The following week Bill Rowe and I turned up and did some painting. There are over 230 panels to be primed, undercoated and glossed. We made a start.

At Norcross CC you are very lucky, you do not have to do anything. You are lucky there is someone to cut the grass and prepare the wickets. You are even luckier in that Phil Dawson spends untold extra hours helping prepare a good surface for you to play on. Although it would be nice if we had a good pavilion with bar attached you are also lucky we don’t because, other than a little tidying up after matches, you don’t have to clean out. Nor do you have to take a turn on the bar, or teas rota.

We don’t ask for much from players which is why it is so disappointing when we do ask for some help and get none.

With this level of support do not be surprised if the few who do give up their time walk away and you end up at a club where you pay £50 a year and £5 or £6 a match, have to take turns cutting the grass, cleaning the pavilion and working on the bar and when you don’t bother they don’t bother picking you.

Where do we  start this month

firstly - fund raising is the life blood of any club and to that end on Saturday 5th July is the club’s yearly main fund raiser. We  are having a Casino night in the Social Centre see the poster elsewhere  and I hope that YOU CAN ALL  support the event. The money raised will help provide new gear and keep sub prices down, amongst other things.. It’s a well worn phrase but its your  club gents, support it.

-

Secondly – discipline not just within our club but generally there is a tone within some games and across most of the League that is spoiling a lot of games this year. We at Norcross have our own code of conduct apart from the league’s own directives – please take the time to read it, its on the notice board. By all means play hard, do your best and play to win but play fair and at the end of the game shake hands and if possible had a drink. It’s a long time playing the game!!!

Last but by not means least – work around the club – The  club doesn’t run itself and  there are many jobs that need doing and we are very lucky that Phil and Bob do a lot. But don’t be shy we need more and more  volunteers, don’t wait to be asked put yourself forward – even if you can only do a bit – we can find something that needs to be done. See the  chairman’s message elsewhere. There was a good club spirit around cricketforce, lets not lose that.

On the playing side - Congrats to the 1st team some decent results - let hope you can now push on and get up the table, though a possible cup run ended against Whittingham. To Lee and his merry men keep going,  a defeat or two is always going to happen, but lets ensure that we  pick up bonus points wherever we can. As  for the  3rd  team by the time you read this you might have played a game or two – cup comps have played merry hell with the Sunday league.

Make ever effort to attend nets practice makes perfect!!!!!

Finally on a personal note - good to See Matty Veitch back bowling,  just a shame its with TBC , may he get a few  wickets but none if  he comes up against Norcy.

Enjoy yer Cricket

Match Reports

1st XI

10/5 – Croston (home)  NX 211.6 Croston 145ao -  A welcomed win for  the 1st team with a century for Adam Jackson (103) , well supported by Steve Wright (53) and Chris Lester (26). In reply good bowling from the skipper Ian Davies (4-18) and his vice Steve Hill (3-27) ensured 10 points

17/5 – White Coppice (home) – WC 56ao NX 57-3 – Successive wins for the 1st team as White Coppice were dismissed for  56 with Mike Veitch returning figures of 7-13. In reply NX knocked off the runs for the loss of 3 wickets.

18/5 – Withnell Fold (away- Meyler Cup) WF 116ao NX 117-7 – Returning to the ground  where a league  defeat was suffered  2 weeks ago –the  1st team  addressed  that with a 3 wicket cup win. All round contributions in the bowling (wickets for  Mike Veitch, Keith Bury and Steve Hill)  was followed by contributions from Fullers, Mike Veitch again and Steve Wright with the bat.

24/5 – Fulwood & Btn 2nd (away) –NX 215ao F&B 201-9  - a trip to the league leaders, but good batting from Wrighty 45, Chris Allan 28, Jacko 41 and the skip 42 ensured a good total. In reply Fulwood put up a good chase  but with Mike Veitch (3-45) the pick of the bowlers, we  claimed another win.

31/5 – Vernon Carus (home) VC 110ao NX 111.1 – good bowling from the opening pair of Steve Hill (3-16 rabbits again!!) and Opey (3-18 including a send off to Simmo) made  sure  Vernons never really got in a position to post a decent total . In reply Wrighty (35) and Chris Allan (52no) got the  reply off to a good start and Jacko (16no) helped complete a great 9 wkt win.

3/6 – Eccleston (home) – NX 128-8 E 129-6 – End of winning streak despite Chris Parker’s 38 and Mike Veitch chipping in with wickets again.

4/6 – Whittingham (home – Meyler  Cup) – W 137ao NX 115-9 – End of the  cup run as Whitty proved too strong. Andy Hill 4-21,Naveed 38 and Steve Hill 32* provided the bright spots.

2nd XI

10/5 Withnell Fold (away) WF 120-7 NX 121-8  - The  2nd XI curse  of giving “easy runs” away didn’t help as  close to 50 were conceded but good bowling from Keith Bury (3-11) restricted Withnell to 120. In reply NX lost wickets steadily despite “sicky” Rick Blampied (28) and at 88- 8 WF were sitting pretty but Keith with 23 not out  including a lovely blow nearly removing  Parkers head – guided us through.

17/5 Grimsargh (away) – NX 109ao Grimsargh 111-0- A disappointing 10 wicket defeat is an understatement – batting nobody got a duck but nobody got  beyond 25. In reply Grimsargh chased the total comfortably with only the Dentist performing with the ball.

18/5 – Thornton Cleveleys (home- Loxham Cup) NX 81ao TC 84-7 – Local derby but we didn’t turn out victorious. A tight game but just not enough runs scored.

24/5 Whittingham (home) – W’ham 131ao NX 132.7 – Returns from Gregor  (4-51) and  the  Dentist (3-29) rained in a potentially dangerous side. A wobble in the reply but Lee Wilson(27),  Wilko (31no), Sam Bury (17) and Dharmesh (12no) steered the team home.

31/5 – New Longton(away) – NL 114ao NX 115-5 – Tight bowling from Cowburn (5-30) and  Drewer (3-23) and  good catching (well take  Wilson’s attempt out of it) and fielding on a hot day saw us hold New Longton to a gettable total. In reply Rick Blamps (30) and Wilson (20 odd again!!!) had us in a comfortable position until a fall of wickets slowed down the  reply before Sauney and  Drewer (29no) got us past the winning post.

3/6 – Wrea Green (away) NX 147ao WG 121ao – On a interesting wicket, extras in our innings ended up topscore on 33. Contributions  from Drew 33 and Sam Bury 29, contributed to our innings. In reply Greg Cowburn 5-37 and  Drew again 3-15 ensured victory.

3rd XI

25/5 – Vernons (away) V186ao NX 185-8 – One that slipped away against a strong VC side. Even Lee Wilson was allowed to bowl  (Sundays only), chipped in with 4-36 and  also in the run chase  scored a good 72 (need one of them on a Saturday now!!!), but we fell just short.

Junior  round up

The  under 15s have  played 4 games  so far 1 in the cup where they went down to a good St Annes side  who’s opening bowler  bowls in the 2nd XI at St Annes!! This year will be  a tough year for the lads  as  they are at the  bottom end of the age scale but a good learning curve for them and hopefully one or two of them can follow Kieran into senior cricket.

In the league  2 out of 4 as they beat Wrea Green and  followed that up with a good win against local rivals Thornton (NX 76-3) by bowling them out for 10 ( Ryan Willetts starring with the bat and Matthew Berry with the ball ). A defeat to Lytham where we only managed 75 and though in with a chance,  good batting from one of the Lytham players saw them home. And then there was  Great Eccleston where  capt Willetts ended up with a fractured  knuckle  no thanks to the opening bowler’s beamer!!! Good knocks from Olly Winnall and Tez Chinn got us to 94 but Gt Ecc have some talented older  juniors and they won comfortably
